Why Bicycle Collisions at Intersections Often Result in Serious Injuries
Intersections can be especially risky for bicyclists because they require cyclists and drivers to share crossing points while monitoring traffic in multiple directions. Drivers making turns or proceeding straight through may not always see a cyclist in time, particularly in areas with limited sight lines or heavy vehicle movement.
Speed differences between bicycles and motor vehicles also increase the severity of injuries in a crash. Even at relatively low speeds, the lack of protective barriers leaves cyclists more exposed to direct force.
Emergency care is often required quickly, especially when air transport is used, as in this case. Rapid response and careful road design can help reduce the likelihood and severity of these types of collisions.
