What Factors Can Contribute to Bicycle and Vehicle Collisions?
Bicycle crashes involving motor vehicles can occur for many reasons, including limited visibility, driver distraction, roadway design, and failures to yield the right of way. Intersections are among the most common locations for these incidents because drivers and cyclists must make quick decisions while sharing the same space.
Lighting conditions can also affect safety, especially during evening hours when it may be harder for drivers to see bicyclists. Wearing reflective clothing, using bicycle lights, and maintaining awareness of surrounding traffic can help improve visibility. Drivers are encouraged to watch carefully for cyclists when approaching intersections and turning onto side streets.
When a bicycle and a larger vehicle collide, the cyclist usually faces a much greater risk of serious injury because they have little physical protection. As a result, safe driving habits and attention from all road users remain key parts of reducing bicycle-related crashes.
