Why Hit-and-Run Investigations Can Take Time
Hit-and-run investigations usually require investigators to gather evidence from several sources before identifying the vehicle involved. Debris left at the scene, paint transfers, tire marks, and surveillance footage from nearby homes or businesses may all help narrow the search. Witness statements can also provide details about the vehicle’s appearance or direction of travel.
In fatal crashes, investigators frequently examine the roadway, vehicle damage patterns, and medical findings to better understand how the collision occurred. Public tips may also assist when a suspect vehicle has distinctive damage. As additional evidence is collected, investigators can build a more complete timeline and determine the events leading up to the crash.
