Santa Rosa County, FL (June 23, 2026) – A 45-year-old bicyclist from Navarre sustained serious injuries on Sunday morning in a collision involving an SUV and a pickup truck on US 98 near Prado St in Santa Rosa County.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 11:40 a.m. on June 21. Troopers reported that a maroon Jeep SUV and the bicyclist were both traveling westbound on US 98 as they approached Prado St. The bicyclist was riding in the designated bicycle lane adjacent to the SUV.

Investigators said a pickup truck was stopped at a stop sign on Prado St north of US 98 when the collision occurred. Authorities determined that the 42-year-old Navarre man driving the Jeep turned right onto Prado St and into the path of the bicyclist.

The bicycle collided with the front right side of the SUV, causing the rider to be thrown in a northwesterly direction. Troopers said the bicyclist then struck the front left side of the stopped pickup truck.

Emergency responders treated the injured cyclist at the scene before transporting him for medical care. Officials described his injuries as serious.

The Jeep driver and a 53-year-old female passenger from Navarre were not injured. The 45-year-old driver of the pickup truck and his 53-year-old female passenger, both from Navarre, were also uninjured.

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash. We wish the injured bicyclist a full recovery.

Why Right-Turn Bicycle Collisions Occur

Collisions between vehicles and bicyclists frequently occur when motorists turn across a bicycle lane without recognizing a cyclist traveling alongside them. These incidents, sometimes referred to as “right-hook” crashes, can happen when a driver focuses on roadway traffic ahead and fails to see a bicycle approaching from behind or beside the vehicle.

Bicyclists traveling in designated bicycle lanes generally expect vehicles to yield before crossing their path. Because bicycles offer little physical protection, even relatively low-speed impacts can result in serious injuries.

Investigators reviewing bicycle crashes examine roadway design, vehicle movements, visibility conditions, witness statements, and physical evidence from the scene to determine exactly how the collision occurred and whether any traffic violations contributed to the incident.
