Why Stop Sign Violations Can Lead to Bicycle Collisions
Intersections controlled by stop signs require all road users to come to a complete stop and carefully check for cross traffic before proceeding. When a cyclist or driver fails to follow this rule, the risk of a collision increases significantly, especially in urban areas with frequent vehicle and pedestrian movement.
Bicyclists are particularly vulnerable in intersection crashes because they have limited protection compared to motor vehicles. Even at lower speeds, impacts can result in serious injuries. Visibility, reaction time, and right-of-way awareness all play important roles in preventing these types of incidents. Traffic safety experts often emphasize the importance of fully stopping at marked signs and scanning all directions before entering an intersection.
