BOARDMAN, Mahoning County, Ohio, Sept. 30, 2026 — One person was taken to a hospital on Tuesday morning, September 29, after a two-vehicle crash at a busy intersection in Boardman. The wreck happened at US Route 224 and South Avenue shortly before 9:30 a.m., according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Two SUVs were involved, troopers said. One of the vehicles sustained heavy front-end damage in the collision. The injured person was taken to a hospital with what troopers described as minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.

The intersection was tied up while crews cleared the vehicles from the roadway. The Patrol is still investigating the cause of the crash, and no cause has been released.

We wish those injured a full recovery.

When Intersection Crashes Are Most Likely to Happen

Crashes at busy intersections tend to cluster around the hours when traffic volume is heaviest, and drivers are moving between multiple lanes of turning and through traffic at once. The late morning and the afternoon commute are common windows when cars, trucks, and pedestrians all compete for the same limited space in a short time.

Visibility and driver attention play a role, too. Glare from low-angle sun during morning and evening hours can make it harder to judge gaps in traffic, and drivers rushing to make a light or a turn have less time to react if someone else misjudges the same gap.

According to the Federal Highway Administration, 8,617 people were killed in intersection-related crashes in the federal analysis summarized in 2023. Most of these crashes involve some combination of turning movements, stop-and-go traffic, and a brief lapse in judging when it's safe to proceed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do right after a car accident?

Move to a safe spot if possible, check for injuries, and call 911. Exchange information with the other driver and wait for law enforcement to document the scene before leaving.

Where do most traffic accidents happen?

A large share of crashes occur at or near intersections, where vehicles cross paths, turn, or stop suddenly in close proximity to one another.

How can drivers stay safer at intersections?

Slowing down on approach, checking mirrors and blind spots before turning, and avoiding distractions like phones can give drivers more time to react to sudden movement from other vehicles.

Even in lower-speed crashes, drivers and passengers can suffer whiplash, bruising, or cuts from broken glass or airbag deployment. Some injuries aren't obvious right away.
