RARITAN, Somerset County, N.J., Sept. 30, 2026 — A boat separated from its trailer and struck an oncoming car near the Somerville Circle in Raritan on Monday morning, September 28. No serious injuries were reported.
Raritan patrol officers responded to the Somerville Traffic Circle at about 11:45 a.m. for a crash involving a boat and trailer and a blue BMW sedan, according to the Raritan Police Department. A preliminary investigation found that a Ram pickup towing an 18,000-pound boat lost control while exiting the circle onto Rte 206 South, Raritan Police Lt. Everett Holt said.
The trailer and boat detached from the pickup and crossed into the northbound lanes of Rte 206, where they collided with the BMW, Holt said. The pickup driver was evaluated for what were described as minor injuries. The BMW driver was not hurt.
The crash caused extended delays in the area. It remains under investigation, and no citations or cause have been released.
We wish those injured a full recovery.
How Investigators Piece Together a Highway Crash Like This
When a crash involves a detached trailer load, police must first secure the scene and reopen the road safely before they can reconstruct what happened. Officers measure skid marks, trailer hitch points, and debris fields, and they may bring in a crash reconstruction specialist to determine the speed and angle at which the load separated.
Because these investigations rely on physical evidence, weight and equipment inspections, and sometimes mechanical testing of the trailer hitch or coupling system, a full report can take weeks to finalize. Toxicology results, when ordered, also take time to be processed by a lab. Agencies generally hold back names and specific findings until they are confirmed, both to protect the accuracy of the record and to give any families involved time to be notified privately.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2,979 passenger-car occupants were killed in two-vehicle crashes involving a passenger car and a light truck in 2023. Crashes involving heavy towed loads add another layer of complexity, since investigators must also account for how the trailer was secured and whether equipment failure played a role.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if a car or object drifts into my lane?
Slow down, move right if possible, and avoid swerving sharply, which can cause a rollover or a secondary crash. Sound your horn if there's time to alert the other driver.
What injuries are common in head-on or high-impact collisions?
These crashes often cause broken bones, chest and abdominal injuries, and head or neck trauma, even at moderate speeds, because the forces involved are higher than in a typical rear-end or side-impact crash.
What causes a towed load to detach from a vehicle?
Common factors include improper hitch attachment, worn safety chains, uneven weight distribution, or loss of control while turning. Investigators typically examine all of these during a crash review.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Raritan, NJ
If you're involved in a crash on a busy roadway, move to a safe spot if your vehicle is drivable and turn on your hazard lights. Call 911 even if injuries seem minor, since some symptoms take hours to appear. Get checked out by a medical provider the same day if possible, and keep records of any treatment.
Exchange information with the other driver and take photos of the vehicles, the road, and any equipment involved, such as a trailer or hitch. Ask responding officers how to obtain a copy of the police report once it's finalized, since it may take some time to complete.
