What Are the Risks of Backing Accidents Involving Towed Units in Missouri?
Backing accidents involving trucks with towed units are a recognized hazard in both commercial and private settings across Missouri. When a driver reverses a vehicle with a trailer or attached unit, the rear of the towed portion can extend significantly beyond what mirrors or cameras can easily capture. Blind spots become larger and harder to manage the longer the towed unit is, making it difficult to see people or objects directly behind the vehicle.
These types of accidents can happen quickly and with little warning, particularly on private property where bystanders may not expect a vehicle to be moving. Pedestrians standing near the rear of a backing vehicle are especially at risk. Spotters, backup cameras, and verbal communication are commonly used to reduce the chance of this type of accident.
