BOWLING GREEN, Warren County, Ky., Sept. 17, 2026 — A man suffered a serious injury Wednesday afternoon, September 16, after a semi-truck and a Chevrolet S10 pickup collided near Central Avenue and Southwood Court in Bowling Green, according to authorities.

Bowling Green Fire Department crews, emergency medical responders and Bowling Green Police Department officers were sent to the scene. A 45 year old man was reportedly hurt in the crash, with investigators describing severe damage to his elbow. His condition has not been released.

The collision remains under review. We hope the injured man recovers fully.

Why Truck Crashes Do So Much Damage, Even at Moderate Speeds

A collision between a semi-truck and a pickup involves a mismatch in weight that can run into the tens of thousands of pounds. That difference means the smaller vehicle absorbs most of the energy in a crash, regardless of how fast either vehicle was moving. Closing speed matters, but so does what each vehicle is built to do when it hits something that outweighs it many times over.

Pickup trucks and passenger vehicles have crumple zones and side structures engineered around collisions with similarly sized vehicles. A semi's frame rail sits higher and is far more rigid, so in some impacts the smaller vehicle's safety cage does not get the chance to work the way it was designed to. Seatbelts, airbags and reinforced doors help, but they have limits when the object on the other side of the impact is a fully loaded tractor-trailer.

Fatigue is a recurring factor in large-truck crashes generally. Long hours behind the wheel, overnight routes and tight delivery schedules can slow a driver's reaction time before a hazard even appears. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 153,452 people were injured in traffic crashes involving large trucks in 2023.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are a truck's blind spots, and why do they matter?

Semi-trucks have large blind zones along both sides, directly behind the trailer, and immediately in front of the cab. A car that lingers in these areas may be invisible to the driver, which is why safety experts advise passing quickly and avoiding driving alongside a trailer for long stretches.

What is an underride crash?

An underride crash happens when a smaller vehicle slides partly or fully beneath a truck's trailer during a collision, often because the trailer sits higher than the car's crumple zone. These crashes can cause severe damage to the upper part of the smaller vehicle.

What typically causes large-truck accidents?

Common factors include driver fatigue, following too closely, mechanical failure such as brake problems, and difficulty maneuvering in tight traffic. Weather and road conditions can also play a role.

How can drivers share the road with trucks more safely?

Give trucks extra following distance, avoid lingering beside trailers, and expect wider turns at intersections. Trucks need more time and space to slow down or change lanes than most passenger vehicles.
