Lake Ronkonkoma, NY (May 23, 2026) – A 10-year-old boy suffered serious injuries after an e-bike collision involving an SUV in Lake Ronkonkoma, according to Suffolk County police.
Investigators said the roadway crash happened around 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 21, near the intersection of Patchogue-Holbrook Road and Richard Place. Police said a 27-year-old Ronkonkoma man was driving a 2020 Porsche Macan south on Patchogue-Holbrook Road and turning right onto Richard Place when the SUV struck Mason Mereroa, 10, of Holbrook.
Authorities said Mason was riding a 2025 e-bike north along the southbound shoulder of the service road when he was hit and thrown from the bike. He was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries. On the contrary, the Porsche driver was not hurt. Investigators said both the SUV and the e-bike were impounded for safety inspections as they keep on reviewing the circumstances surrounding the collision in Lake Ronkonkoma.
We are keeping the injured boy and his family in our thoughts as he recovers.
Why E-Bike Crashes Can Result in Serious Injuries
E-bikes can travel faster than traditional bicycles, which may increase the risk of severe injuries in a collision with a larger vehicle. Riders are also more exposed because they have far less physical protection than occupants inside passenger vehicles.
Intersections and turning movements are common factors in crashes involving e-bikes and SUVs. Drivers turning across traffic or entering side streets may have difficulty spotting riders traveling along shoulders or near road edges, especially at night.
Following these types of collisions, investigators often review vehicle movement, visibility, and roadway layout. Safety equipment, lighting conditions, and the point of contact between the vehicles may also help explain how the crash occurred and why the injuries were severe.
