How Center-Line Crossings Can Lead to Serious Crashes
Collisions involving vehicles crossing the center line often occur suddenly, leaving little time for drivers to react. These types of crashes commonly occur on two-lane roads where opposing traffic shares a narrow corridor.
Several factors may contribute to a vehicle drifting or moving into an opposing lane. Fatigue, distraction, sudden steering corrections, or loss of control can cause a driver to veer across the dividing line. Even a brief moment outside the proper lane can place vehicles directly in the path of oncoming traffic.
Roadway design and driving conditions can also influence these incidents. Curves, limited visibility, and uneven pavement may make it harder for drivers to maintain proper lane position. When vehicles meet head-on after a centerline crossing, the impact can be severe due to the combined speeds.
