How Bike Lane Crashes Are Typically Investigated
After a bicycle-involved crash, investigators usually examine roadway markings, lane boundaries, and visibility conditions to determine how the vehicle entered the bike lane. These factors help clarify whether the movement was intentional, avoidable, or influenced by road conditions.
Vehicle speed, direction, and driver awareness are also reviewed, along with the cyclist’s position at the time of impact. In early-morning crashes, lighting conditions can affect visibility for both drivers and cyclists.
Physical evidence, such as tire marks and impact points, is often used to reconstruct the sequence of events. Medical reports and scene documentation later help confirm the severity of injuries and the final movement of those involved.
