MULBERRY, Polk County, Fla., Nov. 1, 2026 — A driver died on Friday night, October 30, after a three-vehicle crash on State Road 37 in Mulberry, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said. Two other drivers were hurt, one of them seriously.
The crash happened at State Road 37 and Main Avenue. Deputies and Polk County Fire Rescue were dispatched around 8:41 p.m.
A 69-year-old Mulberry woman driving a silver 2018 Chrysler 300 was found with life-threatening injuries when first responders arrived. She was taken to a hospital, where she died shortly after arrival.
Also involved were a 35-year-old Wimauma man driving a 2007 Kenworth semi-truck and a 25-year-old Northborough, Massachusetts, man driving a black 2013 Chrysler 200. The truck driver was treated at the scene. The Massachusetts man was taken to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Investigators said a preliminary review indicates the Chrysler 300 was heading north on SR 37 when it crossed the center line for reasons that have not been determined and struck the driver-side wheels of the southbound semi-truck. The Chrysler 300 then went out of control and hit the southbound Chrysler 200 head-on. SR 37 was closed for about three hours while crews worked the scene. The sheriff's office said the investigation is ongoing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does impairment play a role in fatal crashes?
It can. Alcohol and drug use slow reaction time and judgment, and investigators routinely check for impairment in fatal crashes, though it is confirmed only when an agency releases test results or findings.
Where do fatal crashes most frequently happen?
Multi-vehicle fatal crashes commonly occur on higher-speed roads like state highways, especially at intersections or where a vehicle crosses the center line into oncoming traffic.
What makes a crash more likely to be fatal?
Higher speeds, head-on impacts, and a mismatch in vehicle size (such as a passenger car against a semi-truck) all raise the chance of serious or fatal injury.
How does speed affect whether people survive a crash?
Higher speed increases the force of impact, which raises the risk of severe injury or death and reduces the time a driver has to react or avoid a collision.
