The passenger in the Charger, identified by authorities as 23-year-old Ommie Milagros Figueroa Rodriguez of Norfolk, Va., died from injuries suffered in the crash. The Charger's driver, an adult man whose name has not been released, suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment. No other injuries were reported. Frequently Asked Questions
Where do fatal crashes happen most frequently?
High-speed roads such as interstates and divided highways see a large share of fatal crashes, especially where traffic merges or speeds vary widely between vehicles.
What factors make a crash more likely to be fatal?
Speed, impaired or reckless driving (including street racing), and multi-vehicle involvement all raise the chances that a crash will result in death rather than injury.
How does speed affect whether someone survives a crash?
Higher speeds increase the force of impact and reduce the time a driver has to react, which raises the risk of severe or fatal injury even in vehicles with modern safety features.
Why does wearing a seat belt matter so much?
A seat belt keeps occupants from being thrown from their seat or ejected during a rollover or high-speed collision, which lowers the risk of fatal injury.
