VACAVILLE, Solano County, Calif., Nov. 1, 2026 — A man died, and two women were hurt early on Saturday morning, October 31, in a four-vehicle crash on eastbound Interstate 80 near Vacaville, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 2:35 a.m. just west of Lagoon Valley Rd. A blue Hyundai Tucson driven by a 29-year-old man was heading east on I-80 when it rolled over for reasons that have not been determined and came to rest blocking the eastbound lanes.

Three vehicles then struck the overturned Hyundai: a blue BMW coupe driven by a 20-year-old man, a gray Buick SUV driven by a 40-year-old man, and a white Kia sedan driven by a 60-year-old woman. The Hyundai's driver suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, while the right front passenger, a 29-year-old woman, was taken to Kaiser Vacaville in critical condition. The Kia's driver also suffered major injuries and was taken to Kaiser Vacaville. No injuries were reported among the drivers of the BMW or the Buick.

Investigators believe the Hyundai's driver and passenger were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. CHP said alcohol and drugs are not suspected as factors but will still be looked at, and the exact sequence of events remains under investigation. No arrests have been made. The man who died has not been publicly identified; the Solano County coroner's office is expected to release his name once his family has been notified.

CHP's Solano Area office is asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about what led up to it to come forward.

Our sympathies are with the family of the person who lost their life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does wearing a seat belt matter so much in a crash like this?

A seat belt keeps an occupant from being thrown from their seat or out of the vehicle when it rolls over or is struck, which cuts the risk of severe or fatal injury substantially.

What should a family do after a fatal crash?

Families usually wait for official notification from the coroner's office before a victim's name is released, and can request the final CHP or police report for insurance and records purposes once it's completed.

How are fatal crashes like this one investigated?

Investigators typically examine the vehicles, the roadway, and any available video or witness accounts to reconstruct how the crash unfolded, and they check toxicology results even when impairment isn't initially suspected.

How long do these investigations usually take?

A full CHP or police investigation into a fatal crash can take several weeks to a few months, especially while lab results such as toxicology screens are pending.
