What Factors Can Lead to Severe Crashes at Intersections?
Intersections can be some of the most complex areas on local roadways. Vehicles often approach from multiple directions, and drivers must judge the speed and distance of others before moving through the crossing.
Several factors may contribute to severe crashes at intersections. Drivers may misjudge the timing of a turn, fail to yield the right of way, or enter the intersection too quickly. Visibility can also affect how clearly drivers see oncoming traffic, especially during evening hours.
The vehicle’s position at the moment of impact can also influence the severity of a crash. When a collision occurs at higher speeds or at certain angles, occupants may face a greater risk of being trapped or thrown from the vehicle. These conditions often lead to more complicated rescue efforts and a higher likelihood of serious injuries.
