Why Do Major Highway Crashes Lead to Full Road Closures?
Fatal crashes on interstate highways often require extended closures. Investigators may need to examine vehicle positions, debris fields, and roadway conditions before the scene can be cleared. This process can take several hours.
Highways like I-95 carry heavy traffic volumes at high speeds. When a serious crash occurs, even a short closure can cause long backups. Diverting vehicles helps protect drivers and responders working on the roadway.
Clearing damaged vehicles and ensuring the pavement is safe for travel are also part of the process. Only after these steps are completed can traffic resume safely in both directions.
