How Impaired Driving Contributes to Serious Crashes
Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs significantly increases the risk of losing control of a vehicle. Impaired drivers often have slower reaction times, reduced coordination, and difficulty judging speed or distance.
On rural or low-visibility roads, such as those with curves, ditches, or narrow shoulders, losing control can cause vehicles to leave the roadway, roll, or collide with obstacles.
Law enforcement and traffic safety programs emphasize sobriety checks, education, and public awareness to reduce the number of alcohol- and drug-related crashes. Prompt medical attention for injured passengers can improve survival rates, but fatalities remain a tragic risk when impairment is involved.
