Bridgewater Twp, MN (January 21, 2026) – Emergency crews responded to a two-vehicle crash with injuries on Tuesday morning on Highway 19 near milepost 173 in Rice County.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:56 a.m. when a 2009 Toyota Camry traveling eastbound collided head-on with a westbound 2012 Ford Escape. The impact resulted in both drivers sustaining non-life-threatening injuries. First responders from Northfield Police and Fire, the Rice County Sheriff’s Office, and Northfield Ambulance arrived quickly to assist the injured parties.
Both vehicles’ airbags deployed during the crash. The driver of the Camry, identified as 71-year-old Iqtadar Mahmood of Prior Lake, was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision. The driver of the Ford Escape, 30-year-old Matthew Albert Fontes of Apple Valley, was not wearing a seat belt.
Paramedics transported both individuals to Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment. No alcohol involvement was reported in connection with the crash.
An investigation by the Minnesota State Patrol remains ongoing. Authorities are working to determine the exact cause of the collision, including road conditions and vehicle positions at the time of impact.
