Frequently Asked Questions
How can drivers avoid ending up in a head-on collision?
Staying alert to lane position, slowing down on unfamiliar or narrow roads, and never crossing the center line to pass without a clear view ahead all reduce the risk of a head-on crash.
Where do these crashes tend to happen most commonly?
Head-on crashes are more common on two-lane rural highways and at intersections where a driver drifts, turns into the wrong lane, or misjudges oncoming traffic.
Does passing another vehicle raise the risk of a head-on crash?
Yes. Attempting to pass on a two-lane road puts a driver directly into the oncoming lane, so a head-on crash can result if the pass is misjudged or a vehicle approaches sooner than expected.
Do median barriers actually help prevent these crashes?
Where they're installed, median barriers physically separate opposing traffic and have been shown to cut down on head-on crashes, though many two-lane state and county highways don't have them.
What to Do After a Head-On Crash in Broadalbin, NY
Call 911 right away and stay as still as possible until emergency crews arrive, even if injuries aren't obvious. Head-on impacts can cause injuries that take hours to show symptoms, so a medical evaluation afterward is worth the time. Get the names and contact information of anyone involved or who witnessed the crash, and ask responding officers how to obtain the official report once it's filed. Keep records of any medical visits and vehicle damage, and if an insurance adjuster calls before you've been checked out by a doctor, it's reasonable to ask for more time before giving a statement.
