Frequently Asked Questions
What injuries are most common in car accidents like this one?
Intersection crashes usually cause whiplash, bruising from seatbelts, and head or arm injuries from impact with the door or dashboard. Many injuries, especially in older adults, aren't obvious until a medical exam is done.
What usually causes crashes at intersections?
Failing to stop at a traffic signal or sign, misjudging another vehicle's speed, and distracted driving are among the most frequent causes of intersection collisions.
Why is distracted driving especially risky at intersections?
A driver who glances away from the road for even a couple of seconds can miss a light change or a car already in the intersection, leaving little time to brake or steer clear.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Salem, IL
After any crash, check yourself and others for injuries before doing anything else, and call 911 if anyone needs medical attention. Even if injuries seem minor at first, it's worth getting checked by a doctor, since soreness or swelling from an impact can take hours to show up. Exchange insurance and contact information with the other driver, and take photos of the vehicles and the intersection if it's safe to do so. Ask for a copy of the police report once it's available, and keep records of any medical visits related to the crash. Older adults involved in a collision should be especially cautious about delayed symptoms and should follow up with their regular doctor even after being cleared at the scene.
