BROOKLYN, Kings County, N.Y., Nov. 5, 2026 — Six people died, and several others were injured early on Thursday morning, November 5, after a fire broke out at a home on 58th Street in the Sunset Park section of Brooklyn, NY.
The fire started just before 1:40 a.m. at a two-story home and appears to have begun on the second floor before spreading through the building. The flames reportedly spread to a neighboring home as well. The FDNY said crews arrived within about three minutes and worked to knock down heavy fire showing from the windows.
Four adults were pronounced dead at the scene, and the Medical Examiner's Office will work to identify them. Two more people, a man and a woman in their 50s, died while being taken to a hospital, bringing the death toll to six. Four residents and three firefighters suffered injuries described as non-life-threatening. A man was taken to Staten Island University Hospital with burns to his feet, and a woman was taken to Maimonides Medical Center for smoke inhalation. Fire officials said those two were pulled from the home and would not have survived without the rescue. Firefighters also freed two other occupants who had been trapped behind window bars.
Investigators recovered two lithium-ion batteries at the scene and are trying to determine whether they contributed to the fire. They are also looking at possible electrical causes. An FDNY accelerant-detection dog was used to help rule out the fire being set intentionally. Officials said the fire displaced eight residents from the row of wood-frame homes, and the American Red Cross is providing temporary hotel housing for those left without a place to stay.
We extend our sincere condolences to the families of the deceased victims.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should someone do immediately after a house fire?
Get to a safe distance, call 911 if it hasn't been done already, and avoid re-entering the structure. Let fire crews confirm it's safe before going back inside, and contact local emergency services or the Red Cross if you need temporary shelter.
Where do house fires like this usually start?
Residential fires frequently start in kitchens, from electrical wiring, or from battery-powered devices such as e-bikes and e-scooters charging indoors. Investigators typically examine the room of origin along with nearby wiring and appliances.
What injuries are common in serious house fires?
Burns and smoke inhalation are the most common injuries in house fires, along with injuries from falls or being trapped while attempting to escape. Firefighters responding to active fires can also suffer smoke-related or physical injuries during rescue efforts.
Can battery-related fires be prevented?
Fire officials commonly recommend charging lithium-ion batteries on hard, non-flammable surfaces, away from exits, and not overnight or unattended, to reduce the chance of a fire starting or spreading quickly.
