How Hit-and-Run Cases Are Investigated
Hit-and-run crashes involving pedestrians often require investigators to gather evidence quickly before it disappears. Vehicle debris, tire marks, and surveillance footage from nearby roads or businesses may help identify the vehicle involved. Witness statements can also provide details about the direction the driver traveled after leaving the scene.
Nighttime conditions and wet roads may reduce visibility for both drivers and pedestrians. In many fatal pedestrian crashes, investigators review roadway lighting, shoulder space, and vehicle speed to better understand the events leading up to the collision. Damage to the suspect vehicle can also become a key factor in locating it. Information released to the public may later assist in identifying the driver or vehicle connected to the crash.
