BRYAN, Williams County, Ohio, Oct. 6, 2026 — Two motorcycle riders were seriously hurt on Monday afternoon, October 5, in a crash with a car at an intersection in Center Township. The Ohio State Highway Patrol's Defiance Post is investigating the two-vehicle wreck at State Route 576 and County Road D.
The crash happened around 2:07 p.m. A car reportedly was turning left from County Road D to head north when it failed to yield at a stop sign, pulling into the path of a motorcycle heading south on State Route 576. The motorcycle struck the car.
The car's driver, a 23-year-old man from West Unity, Ohio, sought his own treatment for what were described as minor injuries.
The motorcycle driver, a 55-year-old man from Sturgis, Michigan, was flown by Life Flight to a Toledo hospital with serious injuries. A passenger on the motorcycle, a 44-year-old woman from Constantine, Michigan, was flown by a separate air ambulance to a Fort Wayne hospital, also with serious injuries. Both riders were wearing helmets, according to the patrol.
The Williams County Sheriff's Office, Bryan City Fire Department, Williams County EMS, and a towing crew assisted at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
We hope those who were hurt recover fully and quickly.
What Actually Cuts Down Left-Turn Motorcycle Crashes
Crashes like this one, where a car turns left across the path of an oncoming motorcycle, follow a pattern traffic engineers have studied for decades. Drivers misjudge how fast a motorcycle is closing, or they simply don't see it in the gap between cars. That split-second miscalculation at a stop sign or signal is one of the most common causes of rider injuries.
Engineering fixes have shown real results. Protected left-turn signal phases that stop oncoming traffic while turns are made remove the guesswork entirely. Roundabouts slow all vehicles and cut the number of points where paths cross at speed. Better sightlines, trimmed brush, relocated signs, and improved lighting at rural intersections also give drivers more time to spot a motorcycle before they commit to a turn.
Driver habits matter alongside the infrastructure. Scanning twice before pulling out and treating a motorcycle's distance the same way one would judge a car's distance closes much of the gap that road design alone can't fix. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 6,335 motorcyclists were killed in traffic crashes in 2023.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are motorcycle crashes more likely to happen at intersections?
Yes. A large share of motorcycle collisions occur at intersections where a car is turning, often because the driver did not see the rider or misjudged the rider's speed, similar to the pattern described here.
Does the road surface affect how dangerous a motorcycle crash is?
It can. Gravel, loose debris, potholes, and worn pavement markings reduce a motorcycle's traction and stability far more than they affect a car, making an ordinary turn or stop more hazardous for a rider.
What gear actually helps protect a rider in a crash?
A DOT-approved helmet, abrasion-resistant jacket and pants, gloves, and over-the-ankle boots are widely credited with reducing head, brain, and road-rash injuries in a crash.
What usually causes motorcycle accidents?
Common causes include drivers failing to yield at intersections, left-turning vehicles crossing a rider's path, following too closely, and reduced visibility of motorcycles in traffic.
What to Do After a Motorcycle Crash in Bryan, Ohio
Anyone involved in a motorcycle crash should get checked by medical staff even if injuries seem minor at first, since adrenaline can mask pain from fractures or internal injuries. Riders and drivers alike should ask responding officers how to get a copy of the official crash report once it's filed.
It helps to photograph the scene, note the other party's information, and write down what happened while it's still fresh. Following up with a personal physician in the days after a crash, even after emergency treatment, can catch injuries that weren't obvious at the scene.
