SAN ANTONIO, Bexar County, Texas, Oct. 6, 2026 — Northbound lanes of East Loop 410 shut down on Monday morning, October 5, after a multi-vehicle crash on San Antonio's East Side. All lanes have since reopened.
San Antonio police initially reported five vehicles were involved, but a later preliminary report revised the count to four. SAPD said nobody suffered major injuries in the crash.
A vehicle headed northbound on Loop 410 was speeding when it struck another vehicle. That same vehicle then hit a third and a fourth car.
The Texas Department of Transportation's traffic map had shown multiple northbound lanes blocked near East Houston Street while crews cleared the scene. The crash remains under investigation, and no citations or charges have been announced.
We wish those injured a full recovery.
Why Speed Turns a Single Crash Into a Chain-Reaction Pileup
A pileup rarely starts as a pileup. It starts with one driver going faster than conditions allow and running out of room to stop. Once that first impact happens, every vehicle behind it has only a few car-lengths and a couple of seconds to react, and on a loop like 410, that is often not enough.
The following distance is what turns a close call into a multi-car crash or keeps it from happening at all. At highway speed, a car needs several hundred feet to come to a full stop. Tailgating cuts that taper to nothing, so when brake lights appear ahead, drivers following too closely have no room left to avoid adding their vehicle to the wreck.
Speed compounds the problem twice over. It shortens the time a driver has to notice trouble ahead, and it increases the distance needed to stop once they do notice. A vehicle moving well above the flow of traffic can strike one car, then carry enough momentum to hit a second and third before it loses speed, which is consistent with how officials described this crash unfolding.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 17,008 motor-vehicle crash deaths occurred outside passenger vehicles in crashes involving passenger vehicles in 2023.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I'm stopped near a crash on the highway?
Turn on hazard lights as soon as traffic slows, and if possible, move to the shoulder or a lane away from the wreckage. Staying inside the vehicle with a seatbelt on is usually safer than standing near traffic lanes.
Why is following distance so important?
The gap between vehicles is what gives a driver time to brake safely. A short following distance leaves almost no time to react if traffic ahead stops suddenly, which is a common factor in chain-reaction crashes.
Are secondary crashes common after an initial wreck?
Yes. Once one crash blocks lanes or slows traffic, approaching drivers who don't adjust in time can strike stopped vehicles or each other, adding more cars to the same incident.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in San Antonio, TX
If you're involved in a multi-vehicle crash, stay where it's safe and check yourself and passengers for injuries before stepping out. Call 911 even if the damage looks minor, since some injuries don't show symptoms right away. Exchange information with other drivers if possible, but let responding officers establish how the crash happened rather than assigning blame yourself. A medical check within a day or two is worth doing even if you feel fine, since whiplash and other soft-tissue injuries can take time to appear. Keep a copy of the police report for your records once it's available.
