Madison, TN (August 18, 2026) – A school bus driver and a child were taken to the hospital with minor injuries after a crash on southbound I-65 near mile marker 93 and the Old Hickory Boulevard exit on Tuesday morning, according to police. The bus, carrying 19 children from Davidson Academy, was reported involved shortly after 7:30 a.m.
Three of the five southbound lanes were closed as at least seven ambulances responded. A second Davidson Academy bus arrived to pick up the remaining passengers, and the school confirmed all parents were notified.
The interstate has since reopened. We hope the driver and child have a full recovery.
Why Do School Bus Crashes Prompt a Larger Emergency Response Than Expected?
When a bus carrying many passengers is involved in a crash, responders typically prepare for the possibility of multiple patients, even if injuries turn out to be limited. This means dispatching more ambulances and personnel than a standard two-car crash would require, simply to ensure enough resources are on hand.
Each child on board needs to be individually assessed, which takes considerably more time than evaluating the occupants of a passenger vehicle. Crews work through this process systematically, checking every rider even when most show no visible signs of injury.
Coordinating a safe way to get uninjured children off the bus and to a secondary location, as happened here with the second bus, adds another layer to the response beyond medical care alone. This kind of logistics work is part of why a school bus crash can affect traffic and require a larger response, even when the outcome, as in this case, turns out to be relatively minor.
