Why Extrication Operations Are Sometimes Needed After Serious Crashes
Extrication procedures are often required when vehicle damage traps drivers or passengers inside after a collision. Emergency crews use specialized rescue tools to remove doors, roofs, or crushed sections of a vehicle while working to protect the injured occupants from further harm.
Intersections with heavy traffic can increase the force of impact during two-vehicle crashes, especially when vehicles collide from the side or at higher speeds. Severe structural damage may prevent people from exiting safely without assistance. Rescue operations can take additional time when crews must stabilize damaged vehicles before removing occupants.
After these incidents, traffic lanes are commonly closed to create a safe working area for emergency personnel. Medical teams may also evaluate everyone involved at the scene before deciding whether hospital treatment is needed for injuries that are not immediately visible.
