Cass County, MN (February 26, 2026) – A two-vehicle crash left a 51-year-old woman with life-threatening injuries at the intersection of 76th St SW and King Richard Ave SW in Cass County. The collision occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 25, while both vehicles were traveling eastbound.
Emergency units responded after a 2013 Ford Escape, driven by Rosanne Beatrice Bauer of Albert Lea, lost control on the icy roadway while turning. A 2025 Chevrolet Tahoe, driven by Jordan Lamont Hartmann, 20, of Wadena, was also traveling east when both vehicles left the roadway and crashed.
Bauer was not wearing a seat belt and suffered life-threatening injuries. She was taken to North Memorial Health – Robbinsdale Hospital for treatment. Hartmann suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Lakewood Health System for medical care.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as they become available. We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
Why Icy Roads Increase the Risk of Serious Crashes
Icy road conditions can reduce tire traction and make it harder for drivers to control their vehicles. When roads freeze, even careful steering or braking may cause a vehicle to slide unexpectedly. This can lead to vehicles leaving the roadway or colliding with others.
Turns and intersections can be especially dangerous during icy weather. Slowing down too late or turning too quickly can cause a vehicle to spin or lose stability. Drivers may also struggle to stop in time when approaching another vehicle.
Seat belts provide critical protection during crashes. Wearing a seat belt can reduce the risk of severe injury by helping keep occupants secure inside the vehicle. Driving at lower speeds and increasing following distance can also help reduce crash risk on icy roads.
