Frequently Asked Questions
What factors make a crash more likely to be fatal?
Crashes involving large commercial vehicles, such as tanker trucks, tend to carry a higher risk of serious injury or death because of the size and weight difference between vehicles. Road conditions, speed, and the angle of impact also play a role.
How does speed affect crash survivability?
Higher speeds increase the force of impact and reduce the time a driver has to react or avoid a crash, which generally lowers the chances of survival in a serious collision.
What should families do after a fatal crash?
Families are usually contacted by the investigating agency, in this case, the Virginia State Police, which can provide information on the investigation and next steps as it becomes available.
