Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I'm stopped near a crash on a highway like Route 50?
Move as far onto the shoulder as possible, turn on hazard lights, and stay inside the vehicle with a seatbelt on unless it's unsafe to remain there. Watch for approaching traffic before exiting if you must leave the vehicle.
Why is following distance so important on highways?
Keeping several seconds of space between vehicles gives drivers time to react to sudden braking or stopped traffic ahead, which can prevent a chain-reaction crash involving multiple vehicles.
Are secondary crashes common after an initial wreck?
Yes. Traffic backups and distracted drivers slowing to look at a crash scene can lead to additional collisions nearby, which is why emergency crews usually work to clear lanes and warn oncoming traffic quickly.
