Chicago, IL (January 9, 2026) – A serious auto accident occurred Thursday afternoon near the intersection of E 87th St and S Essex Ave on Chicago’s South Side, leaving multiple people injured and prompting a large-scale emergency response.
The crash was reported shortly after 1:15 p.m. on January 8, following numerous 911 calls from nearby residents and passing motorists. Emergency units from the Chicago Fire Department arrived on scene and began evaluating and treating several individuals injured in the collision.
Medics provided on-site care for a variety of injuries. Although the exact number of people transported to area hospitals has not been confirmed, officials indicated that multiple victims required additional medical attention.
The crash caused temporary traffic congestion in the area as first responders secured the scene and worked to clear the damaged vehicles from the roadway. Details about the cause of the accident remain limited, and the Chicago Police Department is currently investigating.
