Frequently Asked Questions
What injuries are most common in car accidents like this one?
Crashes involving a vehicle running a red light often cause side-impact injuries, including broken bones, head injuries, and whiplash, since occupants may have little warning before impact.
What typically causes crashes like this?
Running a red light is one of the most common causes of intersection crashes, often tied to speeding, distraction, or a driver misjudging the signal change.
Does speed make these crashes worse?
Yes. Higher speed at impact increases the force transferred to vehicle occupants, which raises the likelihood of serious injury, especially in side-impact or T-bone type collisions.
Why is running a red light so dangerous?
It removes the brief window other drivers rely on to react. A vehicle entering an intersection against a red light often gives drivers with the right of way little time to avoid a collision.
What to Do After a Red Light Crash in Chicago, IL
If you're involved in a crash at an intersection, move to safety if possible and call 911 right away. Even if injuries seem minor, it's worth getting checked by a medical provider, since some injuries, like concussions or soft tissue damage, don't show symptoms immediately. Get the names and contact information of everyone involved, along with any witnesses nearby. Request a copy of the police report once it's filed, and keep records of any medical visits or vehicle damage. Chicago's Back of the Yards sees heavy traffic through its intersections, so documenting what you saw and felt in the moment can help later, even if that's only for insurance purposes.
