Frequently Asked Questions
What should a pedestrian do after being hit by a car?
Seek medical attention right away, even if injuries seem minor, since some symptoms take hours to appear. Get the names and contact information of any witnesses, and stay at the scene until police arrive so an official report can be filed.
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
In Massachusetts, drivers must yield to pedestrians who are in a crosswalk or beginning to cross with the signal. Pedestrians should still make eye contact with drivers and watch for turning vehicles before stepping off the curb.
How can drivers reduce the risk of hitting a pedestrian?
Slowing down near crosswalks and intersections, scanning sidewalks before turning, and avoiding phone use behind the wheel all give drivers more time to spot someone on foot.
What injuries are most common in pedestrian accidents?
Pedestrians struck by vehicles often suffer broken bones, head injuries, and internal injuries, since they have little protection compared to someone inside a car.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in Haverhill, Massachusetts
Anyone who witnesses or is involved in a pedestrian crash in Haverhill should call 911 immediately so police and medical responders can reach the scene quickly. If you're able, stay nearby until officers arrive to answer questions and provide a statement while details are fresh. Even bystanders who saw what happened can help investigators by sharing contact information. Family members of someone hurt in a pedestrian crash should keep records of hospital visits and any communication with police, since that documentation can matter later. Above all, give yourself and others time to process what happened.
