Why Crosswalk Hit-and-Run Crashes Are Especially Concerning
Crosswalks are designed to provide pedestrians with a safer place to cross busy streets. When drivers fail to stop or yield, the results can be severe, especially for children. Younger pedestrians are more vulnerable due to their smaller size and limited ability to react quickly.
Morning hours often bring increased traffic as families head to school and work. Reduced attention, speeding, or failure to observe marked crossings can increase the risk of serious injury. When a driver leaves the scene, it can also delay accountability and raise concerns about community safety.
Public awareness, visible crosswalk markings, and driver attentiveness are key factors in reducing pedestrian injuries. Encouraging safe driving habits near schools and residential neighborhoods can help protect children and others walking in these areas.
