Bozeman, MT (June 18, 2026) – A nine-year-old girl died after a bicycle crash involving a vehicle at the intersection of Griffin Dr and Rouse Ave in Bozeman on Wednesday, June 17.

According to initial information, the fatal collision was reported at about 10:52 a.m. Emergency units arrived at the roadway and found the child with severe injuries. She was pronounced dead at the site.

Investigators said the girl had been riding westbound along the south side of Griffin Dr when she abruptly turned northbound across the road in front of a westbound vehicle. Several motorists witnessed what happened and later provided statements to investigators. The driver remained at the roadway and is cooperating with the ongoing review.

The child’s identity has not yet been released. The Gallatin County coroner is expected to provide her name at a later time. Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash and are working to determine all contributing factors.

We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the young girl’s family and all those mourning this loss.

Why Bicycle Safety Reviews Follow Fatal Traffic Crashes?

When a fatal bicycle crash occurs, investigators examine the movements of both the cyclist and the driver in the moments leading up to the collision. Road design, traffic patterns, visibility, weather conditions, and the positions of the people involved can all become part of the review. Witness accounts may also help establish a clearer timeline of what occurred.

Bicycle-related traffic deaths remain a concern in many communities because cyclists have little physical protection when sharing roads with larger vehicles. Even at moderate speeds, a sudden change in direction or an unexpected crossing movement can leave very little time for a driver to react. Factors such as sight distance, roadway width, and traffic flow may also be considered when evaluating how a crash unfolded.

Safety experts encourage both drivers and cyclists to remain alert at intersections and crossing points. Predictable movements, visibility, and awareness of surrounding traffic can help reduce the risk of serious roadway encounters involving bicycles and motor vehicles.
