What Information Is Often Gathered After a Two-Vehicle Highway Collision?
After a serious roadway collision, investigators often begin by examining where each vehicle was traveling before contact occurred. Tire marks, vehicle positions, and roadway signs may help explain how traffic was moving at the time. Photos from the roadway and nearby intersections can also provide added context.
Medical reports may later help clarify the extent of harm suffered by the people involved. In crashes involving more than one vehicle, investigators sometimes review speed, visibility, and whether either driver attempted to avoid contact. Weather and road surface conditions may also be reviewed, especially near busy highway intersections. Early reports are often limited, and more detailed findings can take time as records, witness statements, and vehicle inspections are completed.
