Newburgh, NY (June 5, 2026) – Three children were brought to Westchester Medical Center after a Jeep Wrangler struck them on Thursday evening, June 4, on Starrow Drive in the Town of Newburgh.
The accident happened around 6:52 p.m. The driver was identified only as a 52-year-old Newburgh man operating a 2024 Jeep Wrangler. The report said two children remained in critical but stable condition after the collision. A third child had minor injuries and was expected to be fine.
Neighbors told News 12 the children included a teenage boy and two elementary school-aged girls. Two of the children were described as siblings, but their names and exact ages were not released.
Residents said the children were near a home with shrubs when the wreck occurred. Investigators have not said what caused the roadway accident or whether speed was involved. Still, the review remains active as investigators continue gathering information about the SUV strike.
We are thinking of the children and their families as they face recovery.
Child Pedestrian Crashes Can Raise Serious Safety Concerns
Child pedestrian crashes can be especially severe because young people are smaller and harder for drivers to see. Parked cars, shrubs, fences, and curves can also limit visibility near homes.
Neighborhood streets may feel familiar, but drivers still need enough time to react when children are outside. Children may move quickly, cross unexpectedly, or play close to the edge of the road.
Early reports usually focus on medical status, the driver involved, and where the children were before they were hit. Later details may help explain sight lines, traffic speed, and whether anything blocked the driver’s view; these factors can be helpful in understanding how pedestrian injuries happen on residential streets.
