Staten Island, NY (June 5, 2026) – One person was hospitalized on Friday morning, June 5, after a two-vehicle collision shut down part of Hylan Boulevard in Dongan Hills during the morning commute.
The accident was reported at 6:51 a.m. on Hylan Boulevard, between Cromwell Avenue and Garretson Avenue. Traffic was blocked on the Rosebank-bound side for more than an hour.
One lane reopened at about 8:20 a.m. so vehicles could move through. The closure also led to detours for the S78, S79-SBS, SIM1, SIM6, SIM9, and SIM10 bus routes. One person was brought to Northwell Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze. Their condition was not immediately available.
A black Jeep and a black Hyundai were involved. Photos showed heavy front-end crumpling, deployed airbags, and a wheel separated from the Jeep. The review of the wreck is still active as more information is gathered.
We hope the person hurt in this roadway emergency receives steady care during recovery.
How Can Morning Commute Collisions Disrupt Major City Routes
A serious roadway emergency during rush hour can quickly affect many drivers and transit riders. When lanes close on a busy city route, traffic might back up across nearby intersections.
Bus detours can also make delays harder for commuters. Riders may need extra time because routes can shift away from usual stops until travel lanes reopen.
Vehicle airbags, crushed front ends, and separated parts can show that strong force was involved. These details could help explain why a road needs to stay closed while crews clear debris and make the street safe again. Medical updates may also take time, especially when a person is still being evaluated at a hospital.
