Frequently Asked Questions
How do median barriers help prevent head-on crashes?
Barriers such as cable rail or concrete dividers physically block vehicles from crossing into oncoming lanes, which is usually the only thing standing between a lane departure and a head-on impact on undivided roads like FM 2490.
What should I do if a car drifts into my lane?
Slow down, move right toward the shoulder, and sound your horn to alert the other driver. Avoid swerving sharply left, since that can put you directly into the oncoming lane you're trying to avoid.
What injuries are common in head-on crashes?
Head-on impacts usually cause chest and abdominal trauma, leg and pelvis fractures, and head or spinal injuries, since both vehicles' combined speed is absorbed in the collision.
What causes head-on collisions?
Common causes include a driver drifting out of their lane due to distraction, fatigue, impairment, or a medical event, as well as unsafe passing on two-lane roads.
