What Makes Highway Pedestrian Crashes Especially Dangerous?
Transitional zones between highways and surface streets near Interstate 285 can increase crash risk. In areas like Clayton County, crews often manage merging traffic carefully while responding to incidents.
Highways are not designed for pedestrian use, and vehicles typically travel faster than on local roads. This makes it harder for drivers to stop in time if someone is in the roadway.
When these crashes occur, lane closures are often needed to protect the scene and allow for cleanup. These closures can lead to backups, especially during peak travel hours when traffic volumes are high.
