Bethlehem, GA (August 27, 2026) – A convenience store clerk was hospitalized after a dump truck crashed through a store on Tuesday morning, August 25, in Bethlehem, Barrow County.

The crash happened around 9:15 a.m. at the Super H gas station at 752 Christmas Avenue. According to the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office, the dump truck driver told deputies the vehicle lost power, leaving him unable to steer or stop properly.

The truck struck a utility pole before crashing into the store. A clerk inside suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment. The truck driver sustained minor scratches to his hand.

Georgia Power crews responded to the scene because of the damaged utility pole. Deputies advised the public to avoid the area when possible while emergency and utility crews worked to make the scene safe.

Our thoughts are with the injured clerk and the driver’s recovery. We wish everyone affected by the crash a full and speedy recovery.

What Should Drivers Know About Vehicle Control Failures?

Mechanical problems can sometimes affect a vehicle’s ability to accelerate, steer, or stop normally. Drivers who experience a sudden loss of vehicle control should try to remain calm and avoid abrupt maneuvers that could worsen the situation. Keeping both hands on the steering wheel and looking for a safe place to slow or stop may help when conditions allow.

Commercial vehicles and heavy trucks can be particularly difficult to control because of their size and weight. Drivers should maintain adequate space around large vehicles and avoid traveling in areas where they could be affected if a truck suddenly loses control. Extra caution is important near businesses, intersections, and utility infrastructure.

Motorists approaching an area where a crash has occurred should slow down and watch for emergency personnel, utility crews, and damaged equipment. Drivers should follow temporary traffic controls and avoid entering areas that responders have closed. Giving crews enough space can help them work safely and reduce the risk of additional collisions.
