Colby, KS (February 25, 2026) – A crash involving two semi-trucks temporarily closed the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 between Colby and Oakley on Tuesday morning, February 24. The Kansas Highway Patrol said both trucks were traveling east when the collision occurred.
According to authorities, one semi struck the left rear portion of the trailer being hauled by the other truck. Both drivers brought their vehicles to a stop, but one of the semis came to rest in a position that blocked the eastbound lanes.
Traffic was diverted while troopers investigated and crews worked to clear the roadway. One driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital in Oakley.
The crash remains under investigation. We are thinking of the injured driver and wish them a complete recovery.
How Do Semi-Truck Collisions Affect Highways?
When large commercial trucks are involved in a crash, even minor contact can disrupt traffic. Due to their size and weight, semis may block multiple lanes if they stop at an angle or cannot be moved quickly.
Rear or side trailer impacts can happen if the following distance is reduced. Heavy loads and limited maneuverability can make it harder for truck drivers to avoid sudden changes in traffic flow.
Highway closures involving semis often last longer than typical crashes. Crews may need specialized equipment to inspect damage, clear debris, and safely reopen travel lanes.
