Colorado Springs, CO (March 11, 2026) – A pedestrian lost their life on Tuesday evening after being struck by a car at the intersection of E Costilla St and S Wahsatch Ave in Colorado Springs.
The crash happened shortly before 5:45 p.m. on March 10. Emergency units arrived at the intersection after receiving reports that a person had been hit by a vehicle. Despite attempts to save the victim, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
Early findings show the car was turning left from eastbound E Costilla St onto northbound S Wahsatch Ave when it struck the pedestrian. Officials reported that neither speeding nor impairment appeared to be a factor in the crash.
The intersection remained closed for several hours while crews worked at the scene. By about 9:00 p.m., most lanes had reopened, though northbound S Wahsatch Ave stayed shut down for a longer period.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. Our condolences go out to the victim’s loved ones.
Why Pedestrian Crashes Often Happen at Intersections
Intersections are common locations for pedestrian accidents because vehicles and pedestrians often share the same space at the same time. Drivers may be focused on turning, watching traffic signals, or checking for other cars, which can reduce the time they have to notice someone crossing the road.
Left turns can present additional challenges. Drivers must judge the speed of oncoming vehicles while also watching for people crossing the street. When visibility is limited or traffic is busy, it can become harder to detect pedestrians in time to stop.
Road design, lighting conditions, and crosswalk placement can also influence safety. Clear markings, proper signals, and good visibility often help reduce the chance of a crash involving someone on foot.
