Columbia County, OR (March 5, 2026) – A deadly three-vehicle crash occurred on Thursday evening, February 26, along Highway 30 in Columbia County.
Emergency units were called to the scene around 5:39 p.m. near mile marker 64. Initial reports indicate that a motorcycle and two SUVs were involved in the collision.
Investigators say the motorcycle, an Indian Chieftain operated by 32-year-old Nick Anthorny Verne of Kalama, Washington, was traveling eastbound through a sweeping right-hand curve. During the maneuver, the motorcycle reportedly crossed the centerline into the westbound lane.
The bike sideswiped a westbound Toyota RAV4 driven by 73-year-old Kenneth Edward Uphoff of Ocean Park, Washington. After the initial impact, the motorcycle then collided head-on with a westbound Toyota 4Runner driven by 32-year-old Elliette Michelle Vasquez of Astoria.
Verne was pronounced dead at the scene. Vasquez and a passenger, 60-year-old Michael Evaristo Vasquez of Astoria, suffered minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital. Uphoff was not hurt in the crash.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. Our condolences go out to the victim’s loved ones.
Why Curves on Highways Can Increase the Risk of Serious Crashes
Highway curves can create challenging driving conditions, particularly when vehicles approach them at higher speeds. Even a small miscalculation in steering or lane positioning can cause a vehicle to drift across the centerline, placing it directly into oncoming traffic.
Motorcycles may face additional risks on curved roads because they rely heavily on balance and precise control while leaning through turns. Gravel, uneven pavement, or sudden adjustments during a curve can make it harder for riders to maintain their lane.
Collisions that occur when vehicles cross the centerline often lead to severe outcomes. Head-on impacts involve the combined force of both vehicles’ speed, which increases the chance of serious injury or death. Maintaining proper speed and lane control through curves can help reduce these types of accidents.
