Frequently Asked Questions
Where do fatal crashes most frequently occur?
They are common on rural highways and farm-to-market roads, where higher speeds and limited lighting can make rear-end and intersection collisions more likely to turn deadly.
What factors make a crash more likely to be fatal?
Higher speeds, nighttime or low-light conditions, and a large difference in vehicle size, such as a passenger car striking a commercial truck, can all increase the chance of a fatal outcome.
How does speed affect crash survivability?
Higher speed means more force at impact and less time for a driver to react or stop, which raises the risk of severe or fatal injury in a collision.
Why does seat belt use matter so much?
Seat belts keep occupants from being thrown against the interior of the vehicle or ejected, which lowers the risk of fatal injury in a crash.
