Frequently Asked Questions
What factors make a crash more likely to be fatal?
High speed, loss of vehicle control, and striking a fixed object such as a pole or tree all raise the chances that a crash will be deadly, since the impact forces involved are much harder to survive than in a typical collision between moving vehicles.
How does speed affect whether people survive a crash?
Higher speeds mean more energy has to be absorbed in a crash. Even a modest increase in speed can turn a survivable impact into a fatal one, especially when a vehicle hits something solid like a utility pole.
What should a family do after losing a relative in a fatal crash?
Families typically start by requesting the official police report, contacting the medical examiner's office for information, and keeping records of any communications with investigators. Local victim services programs can also help with next steps.
