South Austin, TX (August 29, 2026) – A construction worker was killed, and another was injured on Thursday afternoon, August 27, when a two-story house under construction collapsed on Salvador Street in the Creekside at Estancia neighborhood.

According to Travis County Emergency Services District 5, crews were called at approximately 4:20 p.m. after strong winds affected the area. Four workers were at the home when it collapsed. Two were able to get out safely, while two others became trapped beneath the structure.

Fire Chief Chris Barron said responders found the trapped workers pinned beneath collapsed wall trusses. One worker suffered minor leg injuries and was taken to a hospital before later being released. The other worker died at the scene.

Officials said straight-line winds of approximately 50 to 70 mph were reported in the area at the time. Several agencies responded, including Austin-Travis County EMS, the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, and Travis County STAR Flight. The crash is still under investigation.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family, friends, and coworkers of the worker who died, and we hope the injured worker continues to recover.

How Structural Instability Can Complicate Construction Site Emergencies

Buildings under construction may not yet have all of the structural reinforcement found in a completed home. Strong winds or other sudden forces can place heavy loads on partially finished walls, roof sections, and framing.

When a structure collapses, workers can become pinned beneath lumber, trusses, roofing materials, or other debris. The weight of those materials can cause serious injuries and make rescue operations more difficult.

Wind strength, construction stage, structural support, falling debris, and worker location can all affect the severity of a collapse. These incidents may require firefighters, medical crews, and specialized rescue personnel to stabilize the scene before trapped workers can be safely reached.
