Benton, WI (August 10, 2026) – A head-on crash on Saturday, August 8, in Lafayette County left two people injured and resulted in the arrest of an Iowa driver on suspicion of first-offense operating while intoxicated, causing injury.
Emergency crews responded shortly before 3 p.m. to County Trunk Highway W in the Town of Benton for a two-vehicle crash.
Investigators determined that a 57-year-old man from Independence, Iowa, was driving east on County Trunk Highway W when he crossed the centerline and collided head-on with an oncoming Ford driven by a 51-year-old man from Kaycee, Wyoming.
The Wyoming driver and his passenger reported minor injuries and were transported to Mercyhealth Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa, for treatment.
The Iowa driver’s vehicle caught fire following the crash. He was also taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries and was later arrested on suspicion of first-offense OWI causing injury. He was additionally cited for operating left of center. The crash remains under investigation by the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office.
