San Diego, CA (August 12, 2026) – A two-vehicle crash on eastbound Interstate 8 near State Route 163 in San Diego caused minor injuries and blocked part of the freeway on Monday, August 10.

According to the California Highway Patrol incident log, the crash involved a gray Honda Accord and a silver Nissan Rogue. Both vehicles were reported in the left shoulder area, with the Nissan Rogue facing the wrong direction. The vehicles were blocking one to two lanes.

One person was transported to Kaiser Zion Medical Center by ambulance for treatment. A vehicle was also reported blocking part of the roadway before the scene was cleared.

The CHP initially classified the incident as a traffic collision with an ambulance en route before updating it to a crash involving minor injuries. Tow trucks were requested for the damaged vehicles.

We wish the injured victim a swift recovery.

What Causes Minor-Injury Crashes on Busy Freeways?

Minor-injury crashes on freeways can occur when vehicles traveling at different speeds collide during lane changes, merging, or sudden traffic slowdowns. Even a relatively low-speed impact can cause vehicle damage and injuries to people inside the vehicles. The severity of a crash can depend on vehicle size, speed, impact angle, and whether occupants are properly restrained.

Freeway crashes can also create additional hazards when damaged vehicles remain in travel lanes. Drivers approaching a stopped vehicle may have only a short distance to react, particularly when traffic is heavy or visibility is limited. Maintaining a safe following distance gives drivers more time to brake or move around a hazard when conditions allow.

Drivers should remain attentive when traffic begins to slow unexpectedly. Sudden lane changes can create additional conflicts with nearby vehicles, so any maneuver should be made only when there is enough space. Keeping a steady speed, watching several vehicles ahead, and staying alert to changing traffic conditions can help reduce the risk of freeway crashes.
