What Happens When a Vehicle Rolls Over on a Highway?
Rollover crashes are among the more complex types of roadway emergencies because they can affect multiple lanes and create significant traffic disruptions. These crashes may occur for several reasons, including sudden steering maneuvers, contact with another vehicle, roadway hazards, or loss of control at higher speeds.
When a vehicle overturns, emergency personnel may focus first on securing the roadway and checking occupants for possible injuries. Traffic may be reduced to fewer lanes while damaged vehicles are removed and debris is cleared. Investigators may also examine road conditions, vehicle damage, witness statements, and other available evidence to better understand what led to the rollover. In the hours following a highway crash, early reports frequently contain limited information until a more complete review has been conducted.
